Truk Lagoon - July 2002

Truk Lagoon, in Micronesia, is probably the most renowned wreck-diving site in the world. In WWII it was a major Japanese naval and air base and was the target of a major American fast carrier strike force in February 1944. In all, 45 ships were sunk totalling 220 000 tons. The wrecks are mainly merchant vessels with some military ships, all carrying impressive cargoes of war materials and munitions. Our bases were the excellent Truk Odyssey liveaboard and Blue Lagoon Resort. In all we dived on 16 of the best known wrecks. Definitely a trip to repeat! Pictures shot on film with Nikonos V and subsequently scanned.
